Sophia was at the watercooler with her friend Isabella when they started to talk about money. Sophia got tense and didn’t really say much. Her friend noticed, and asked, “Sophia, is this something you don’t want to talk about?”

Sophia said “To be honest, I don’t know much about money. I try to avoid the topic.”

“I completely understand. I used to feel the same way. After my salary negotiation with my boss, he suggested I get more comfortable with talking about money. I asked him why and he said that it will help feel more confident asking for a raise. After all salary negotiation is based on a money ask.

“How is that?” Sophia leaned in.

I was taught that money was bad and that as long as we worked hard it was going to come. Little did I know that this was not true. It was all limiting beliefs that I had learned.

“Limiting Beliefs?” Sophia asked

Yes, these are false perceptions, ideas or thoughts that we base our beliefs on which usually negatively impact us. If our beliefs about money is negative then anything related to money will be uncomfortable.

Wow, so this explains a lot. This is why I am afraid of asking for a raise. I also don’t feel comfortable talking about money and I think my limiting belief is that I am not worth the increase.

“well, the good thing is that you can actually work on this by getting comfortable by talking about money. What I did was learn or speak about it for 5 minutes a day. No matter what the topic was, I was dedicating 5 minutes a day to this. If you like I can help. I now love to talk about money. I now understand that my services should be accurately compensated.”

“That would be great! Yes!”
